Stressed? Deal With It!

We are live in a fast-paced world, which is only made worse with the changes due to the COVID 19 crisis. Stress is as common as the air we breathe. We must learn to manage our everyday routines and fight off the problems that stress us out. However, before we can cope with it, we must understand what stress really is and identify how it can appear in our life.

What In The World Is Stress?

Stress is an imbalance in the physiological, biological, and social aspects of our life. There are many reasons why a person gets stressed—family problems, financial difficulties, career obligations, a quarrel between friends, etc. You may feel you don’t have any large stressors in your life, but small problems all add up to the same result as a large stressor.

Stress can start from anywhere. Some may start from your body due to overwork, or build up mentally, which can affect the way you think and lead to negative results. The way to deal with stress is find out the cause and determine ways to get rid of it.

Stress Management 101

Stress management involves recognizing that you are experiencing stress and then taking steps towards decreasing or eliminating it. It provides the tools, procedures, and methods that allow us to take control of our problems and make sure that they don’t affect our daily routine.

Begin to address it by identifying the sources of stress in your life. When you have an idea of how stress has worked its way into your life, there are plenty of solutions to make it go away. Keep in mind that the simplest solutions to your problems are always the best way to deal with it. Seek to balance work and play.

Identify your biggest priorities, and when you might need to say no to certain things and take a step back. Don’t take on everything that comes your way. Break-up larger tasks into smaller steps. Delegate tasks to others when possible.

Inexpensive Ways To Reduce Stress

  1. When suffering from stress, you can take some time off and let your body rejuvenate. Start pampering yourself and treat yourself to a massage. Visit friends and relatives, have fun shopping, or take some leisure walks.
  2. A vacation with nature can be a great relief to stress; the serenity and relaxing scenery can do wonders for your mental and emotional state. Camp out and leave your thoughts about work at home, give yourself a break from all those burdens.
  3. Indulging yourself with games and sports is a great way to dispel stress from your system. When playing sports and games, you have to concentrate on what you are doing in order to succeed. This is a great way to divert your mind from your mental burdens and concentrate on the task at hand.
  4. Ancient practices can provide solutions to your stress. You can enroll in yoga classes and stretch those problems away or go for meditation classes. Meditation will train you to free your mind from the problems at hand and allow you to focus on relaxation and peace of mind.
  5. Another method to help you relax and keep your mind at peace is through aromatherapy. Experiment with various scents to find those that help you relax. You can go for scented candles or assorted incense that will help you with your stress management.

  1. Exercise is one example of an activity that is a very beneficial stress reliever. Exercise promotes the release of endorphins in your body, which lessen pain and increase your sense of well-being and can increase your overall energy levels.
  2. Get enough sleep. This important factor is often overlooked when stressed. The better rested you are, the easier it is to deal with life’s challenges.
  3. Find hobbies and activities that you enjoy that can take your mind off the stresses in your life. For example, listening to music can lower your blood pressure, slow your heart rate, and calm stress. Movies also offer a positive distraction from stressful situations. A good movie absorbs your attention and distracts you. Dancing is a great stress reducer because the cardiovascular activity triggers the release of endorphins, which are hormones that make you feel better. Knitting, with its rhythmic, repetitive movements, stimulates the release of serotonin and its calm, happy feelings.
  4. Coloring can reduce the thoughts of a restless mind. The process of coloring refocuses our attention. It takes your attention away from yourself (and those things that are stressing you out!) and onto the present moment. The difficulties of life evaporate from your awareness. It generates mindfulness and quietness, which allows your mind to get some rest.
  5. Journaling can serve as an escape and forces you to focus on you and the present moment. It’s one of the best ways to clear your mind and get in touch with your thoughts and feelings. Writing about emotions (negative and positive) can improve your mental and physical health.

My Favorite Methods

Coloring and journaling are my first choices for reducing my stress. My mind thinks the same thoughts over-and-over again. When I color or journal, my mind clears itself from those repetitive thoughts. My mind is able to rest. Many times, with my mind free to roam, I arrive at solutions.

When I color it empties my mind. It gives me something to focus deeply on while the cares of the day fall away. While I’m spending all my focus on the minute details of coloring, my mind begins to wander a bit. This freedom allows me to make connections when before there were none. Sometimes this brings personal growth and sometimes this brings some nice creative ideas where there were none before.

A journal provides me an opportunity to clarify my thoughts and feelings. It is an excellent problem-solving tool. Often, by writing my problems down I can arrive at solutions I wasn’t able to see prior to journaling. Furthermore, it provides an opportunity for reflection and allows me to see patterns I didn’t before.
